Description
of project:
The
Louisiana State Department of Agriculture relocated to an abandoned retail
headquarters building featuring a 10,000-square foot atrium entrance area with
more than 600 diseased and pest-infested plants from the early '80's. Heroman
Services began by removing the deteriorated soil and plants and preparing the
beds for the new installation. To keep within the state's budget, more than 40
prison inmates from the Department of Corrections supplied additional manpower.
Combining the installation crew with prisoners and armed guards offered new
challenges. For example, work had to be performed during daylight hours on two
consecutive weekends to avoid contact with the public, and materials had to be
pre-approved. Plus, 40 inmates had to be taught the art of careful
planting.
Lake
View Jasmine, black olives, traveler's palm and stripe bamboo set the stage for
the new interiorscape. Seventeen-inch birds of paradise, 21-inch rhapis palms
and 10 20-gallon King Sago palms accent the major players. More than 1,000
containers of 8-inch golden pothos and 800 8-inch containers of English ivy
serve as ground covers. Beds of crotons and Red Hot anthuriums add spot color
and accent to the display. A water-garden area surrounded by variegated
aspidistra, cardboard palms and birds of paradise adds drama to the
interiorscape. A dark corridor office comes alive with rhapis and golden pothos.
