A gift of $65 million to renovate this dazzling
1930s hotel, a historic landmark, to its former grandeur included
updating this interior and rooftop garden plantings to complement
the building's architectural embellishments.
At the entrance, small kentias planted in
antique containers original to the hotel and mounted on pedestals
draw the eye upward. On the executive floor, lucky bamboo
brings a Zen look to the bar area.
In the rooftop garden, marble planters feature
showy plantings, including five 36-inch Magnolia 'Little Gem'
trees, four 24-foot Bambusa Oldhamii, 20 40-inch 'East
Palatka' holly trees and 12,000 4-inch Liriope.
During the installation, the contractor was
asked to use the underground "tunnel" that once
transported celebrity guests like Huey Long privately in to the
hotel.
